CLASS: people knowing
TERM: fall 09
We were asked to choose two "non-places" as destinations to observe. One was to be a physical location in the Greater Los Angeles area, and the other was an electronic or virtual place. Both of these spaces were to be inhabited by people. The goal was to observe each space and attempt to discover unseen, unspoken and unknown layers.
For my physical space, I chose to observe a bridge in Altadena, CA. My initial observations were fairly superficial. I mainly looked for signs that people occupied this space. Upon my second visit, I chose to delve further into the bridge itself... to learn about those who constructed it through the bridges many unique characteristics and imperfections. I chose to document these imperfections through the medium of photography.
The virtual place visited was the Pandora account of Timothy Long. Much like my physical location, my first visit was just scratching the surface. I found out the obvious by clicking through all of the different options. The second time around, I was able to find out a little more about Timothy's Pandora usage. For instance, I found that much of his time on the site was spent in the early days of the work week, Monday - Wednesday and that electronic influenced music is his music of choice.
